NWT Fire says water tankers have completed an “aggressive initial attack” on a new wildfire 22 km northwest of Fort Simpson.
Fire FS011, a kilometre north of the Mackenzie River, was caused by lightning and discovered on Saturday night, the territory’s wildfire agency said in a Sunday afternoon update.
“Crews are now on the ground, supported by aircraft, working to suppress this fire, which measures under one hectare. There is no risk to the community at this time,” NWT Fire stated.
No other new fires were reported on Saturday or Sunday.
Crews are still fighting a 500-hectare fire 38 km east of Fort Liard, the Tulip Lake fire near Fort Smith – which is being held – and a 337-hectare fire 18 km northeast of Wrigley.
“Community protection work continues to advance, with most lines nearly complete with sprinkler setups in town,” NWT Fire said of the Wrigley fire, known as FS007.
