NWT Fire reported another string of new wildfires caused by lightning on Sunday, though none pose an immediate threat to any communities.

The bulk were in the Beaufort Delta, including one wildfire – named EV014 – some 40 km north of Inuvik, about as far north on the territorial mainland as such a fire has ever been recorded.

NWT Fire published a full list of new fires to Meta’s channels.

None of the territory’s existing fires were reported to have made any significant advances on communities or infrastructure, though heavy smoke is expected to continue in the Dehcho.

In the North Slave, a fire a few kilometres south of the Ingraham Trail near the Cameron River Crossing was quickly brought under control.

In the South Slave, a new fire about 10 km west of Highway 1, not far from Cameron Hills, is being tackled by a crew and helicopter. In the Sahtu, a few new fires have been detected in the vicinity of the Mackenzie Mountains.

“Extreme fire weather conditions and continuing lightning are expected for much of the NWT,” NWT Fire reported. Of note, no recent fires were caused by people, which the territorial wildfire agency applauded.

The number of new fires reported on a daily basis has steadily ticked up in recent days. Long-range forecasts throughout the season have suggested that July and August could bring dangerous fire conditions to much of the territory.
