The City of Yellowknife introduced a fire ban on Wednesday, saying conditions are “extremely dry” and the ban will be in place until further notice.

“The current fire danger rating within Yellowknife is classified as extreme,” the city stated in an advisory confirming the ban, which kicks in at 5pm on Wednesday, July 2.

“Implementing a fire ban is a proactive measure to reduce the risk of wildfire within city limits. The fire ban prohibits all open-air burning and the discharge of fireworks, including the use of approved fire pits,” the city stated.

Camp stoves, enclosed barbecues, CSA-approved propane appliances and outdoor propane burners for cooking and heating (within a fire pit) remain permitted.

The city also operates a wildfire page with more information.
