Tthets’éhk’édélı̨ First Nation is advising residents of Jean Marie River to be prepared in case they have to evacuate as a wildfire burns more than 20km away.
The First Nation posted notice of an evacuation alert on its Facebook page Monday afternoon.
It said an evacuation alert does not mean that residents have to evacuate but should prepare personal belongings if the evacuation alert is upgraded to an evacuation order.
According to NWT Fire, an out-control-wildfire that is approximately 2,200 hectares in size is burning 24km northwest of Jean Marie River and 23km southeast of Fort Simpson.
The territory’s wildfire agency said in a Monday afternoon update that the northeast corner of the fire is particularly active but wildfire crews and aircraft are working to contain it. NWT Fire said residents of Jean Marie River may see smoke from the fire.
The First Nation said it was working to get the radio station up and running to help keep people informed.
It advised residents to check with the Band Office if they have any questions and stay updated on NWT Fire’s website.
