In 2022, Yellowknife rapper Jonny Vu had four days to prepare for his set at Folk on the Rocks after a scheduled performer cancelled. This year, he had 10.
Coincidentally, Vu’s latest single released on July 17 – one day before Folk weekend began.
The track, High, features a bossa nova-esque guitar track, unbeat drums, and lyrics fit to be the backing track for your whirlwind summer romance.
Vu told Cabin Radio that High encapsulates the first stage of dating someone.
“Sometimes you feel you want to just give your all and go all in, but you know that that’s not the right thing to do, because it can come off a little too strong.”
The idea came to Vu during Steadily Deadly Fest, Yellowknife’s newest music festival featuring punk, metal and alt bands.
“I just saw a bunch of people mosh pitting, and the line ‘bleeding out in the mosh pit’ came to me. I pretty-much just worked that into the hook and then wrote everything around it,” he said.
Vu drops another single, Bad Liar, on August 1. He’ll be performing it at Yellowknife’s Old Town Ramble and Ride festival.
This year at Folk, Vu said he’s doing something different on stage with DJ Altarboi.
Catch his last-minute set on Sunday at the Canadian North Beer Garden Stage from 6:15pm.
