The City of Yellowknife is looking to use a grassy strip next to the Fritz Thiel ball diamonds as temporary parking while a nearby lot is closed for work.

A sign advertising the move was installed in late July.

Asked about the initiative, the city provided a copy of the sign, which states the grassy area – between the ball diamonds and a strip of homes to the west of 50 Avenue – will only be used for parking in the “non-snow months” of May to October.

A city spokesperson confirmed the idea is for vehicles to park next to the ball diamonds in summer while a parking lot across the street is closed.

The usual parking lot at the corner of 50 Avenue and School Draw Avenue will be shut for several years while a lift station at one end of the lot is replaced.

That lot is often used for vehicles with trailers given the nearby boat access to Great Slave Lake. The sign for the temporary parking suggests it’s being designated with trailers in mind.

Some residents had expressed concern about the lack of alternative parking for trailers before the new sign went up.

A similar sign indicates a grass square outside the nearby Rotary Park will also be used for temporary parking.
