Travel along the Dempster Highway was disrupted on Wednesday after a fuel tanker reportedly overturned south of Fort McPherson.

A bulletin sent out by the Department of Infrastructure’s Beaufort Delta region at noon on Wednesday stated an accident south of the Peel River had caused the postponement of ferry services.

The CBC reported the department had confirmed an overturned fuel tanker was the problem. The department told Cabin Radio shortly after 1pm that it was working to acquire more information about what had taken place.

The territory’s online spill tracker lists a spill on Wednesday morning of an unconfirmed quantity of petroleum about 1.5 km south of the Peel River ferry’s southern landing.

By 3pm, the GNWT’s Drive NWT website and Department of Infrastructure Facebook page stated service had resumed and the highway was open for travel. However, within half an hour, the same website showed the ferry crossing and highway on the south side as once again closed.
