Jackson Lafferty and Clifford Daniels will be the two contenders in next month’s Tłı̨chǫ grand chief election.

Candidates’ names were put forward during a session on Friday at the close of this year’s assembly and gathering in Behchokǫ̀.

Ex-Whatì chief Alfonz Nitsiza nominated former Behchokǫ̀ chief Daniels, who was defeated by Bertha Rabesca Zoe in that community’s election two months ago, for the role of grand chief.

Therese Mantla then nominated Lafferty, the incumbent.

Each candidate had the required 20 Tłı̨chǫ citizens present in person to act as seconders.

An attempt to nominate Leon Lafferty – another former Behchokǫ̀ chief – as a third candidate failed when he turned down the nomination. Nobody else’s name was put forward.

Jackson Lafferty was first elected in late 2021, defeating Eddie Erasmus and George Mackenzie. He had resigned as the Monfwi MLA to pursue the position of grand chief.

Election day is September 29. Whoever wins will serve a four-year term.

Online voting will be available earlier in September, and there will also be an advance poll. More information about who can vote, and how to vote, is available on the election’s dedicated website.
