Fort Smith Métis musician Tom Hudson is releasing a new album in September with a launch party in Yellowknife planned.

Hudson’s career spans at least seven decades. In the 1960s, he toured the North playing with friends in a band named The Centennaires.

He says he has been co-writing and recording music since the 1980s and was the lead singer of Yellowknife’s The Komatiks, among other roles.

New album When We Are One is his second under his own name. The first was Dance Among The Stars, released in 1997.

Dance Among The Stars “gained cult following with the title track connecting generations of fans,” a news release stated.

The new album is designed to celebrate 60 years of Hudson performing live music.

“Over the last 60 years, Tom’s gentle manner and powerful voice have earned him respect and accolades from the musicians who played and created music with him,” the news release continued.

“Songs from the album When We Are One focus on themes of the people and the land he lives on. Tom’s lyrics reflect his changed views on life since moving back to where he was born.”

The album will be launched through a two-night musical celebration at Yellowknife’s Top Knight on September 12 and 13.

Each evening will feature Hudson along eight musicians from the North Slave and South Slave: Lee Mandeville, Shane Daniels, Bobbi Bouvier, Theoron Daniels, Norm Glowach, Pat Braden, Paul White and Dave Martineau. Hudson and Glowach jointly wrote the 11 tracks on the new album.

The Top Knight shows will begin with a performance of Dance Among The Stars, then a performance of When We Are One, concluding with “a set of music highlighting the musicians in the band.”

Tickets, priced at $30, are available via Eventbrite. Doors open at 7pm with music from 8pm.
