A bison carcass by the side of Highway 3 identified as a possible anthrax case last month has tested negative, the NWT government says.

The carcass was found in mid-August at km 164 of Highway 3, in the middle of an area between Fort Providence and Behchokǫ̀ that had been affected by wildfires for weeks.

Anthrax is not uncommon among bison in the territory and past outbreaks have claimed hundreds of animals as it is fatal to bison. While it does not normally spread to humans, people are advised to remain away from any carcasses or sick animals.

Providing an update to Cabin Radio on Wednesday, the GNWT said lab results have confirmed a negative test for anthrax and no further action is needed.

In addition, a regular monitoring flight over parts of the North Slave on August 25 found no other bison carcasses, the territory said.
