The Dene Nation has decided to postpone its 55th National Assembly to support communities affected by the ongoing wildfires in the territory.
Leanne Goose, a spokesperson for the Dene Nation, in a notice on Tuesday said the postponement of the assembly “reflects a commitment to supporting emergency response efforts and ensuring that resources are directed where they are most needed.”
A new date for the assembly, originally scheduled to take place in Fort Good Hope from September 16-18, will be announced once it is “deemed safe and appropriate.”
“Our hearts and prayers are with all the communities impacted by wildfires. We extended our thanks to the many hands working together to protect and support those in need,” Dene Nation Chief George Mackenzie was quoted as saying.
“The safety and well-being of our people come first, and we stand in solidarity with all those affected.”
The Dene Nation thanked emergency responders, volunteers, and community members who have come together to provide aid and support.
