Wagenborg says a “full investigation” will take place into the circumstances under which its ship Thamesborg ran aground in the Northwest Passage on Saturday.
The freighter, which was carrying industrial carbon blocks from China to Quebec, is still stranded.
Salvage experts will soon arrive at the scene in the Franklin Strait off Nunavut, Wagenborg – a global shipping firm based in the Netherlands – told Cabin Radio in a statement on Monday.

“The fuel tanks of Thamesborg and its cargo holds are all intact. A first thorough assessment conducted by the crew of Thamesborg has shown damage to the hull and ballast tanks of the ship which is stable and aground,” the company stated, confirming information provided by the Canadian Coast Guard on Sunday.
Two coastguard icebreakers, the Sir Wilfrid Laurier and Jean Goodwill, are at the scene.
Wagenborg said the Thamesborg crew and a salvage team “are formulating steps for the safe refloating of the vessel.”
“The exact cause of the incident is yet unknown with a full investigation into the exact circumstances leading to the grounding to follow,” the company stated.
