NWT highway transport officers have laid charges after two trailers were allegedly left on Highway 3 during near zero-visibility conditions last week.

Police previously said a collision involving two commercial vehicles and a passenger vehicle “in extremely dangerous conditions” closed the highway last Thursday. Nobody was reported to have been hurt.

Fog and wildfire smoke are understood to have mixed that morning. The highway was closed in both directions for eight hours after the incident, which took place just north of Fort Providence.

The NWT’s Department of Infrastructure, issuing a statement about the closure a week later, said highway transport officers had discovered two trailers were left on Highway 3 that day, “obstructing the flow of traffic.”

“The drivers or trucks were not present on scene. Given the significant safety risk involved, officers laid two charges, one to each driver,” the department told Cabin Radio by email.

The drivers charged and companies involved were not named.

Wildfires are still burning in the area and visibility warnings remain in place along the highway between Fort Providence and Behchokǫ̀.
