Rain on Sunday and Monday may bring “some relief” from heavy smoke blanketing various communities, NWT Fire says.
Yellowknife and the surrounding area spent much of Saturday covered in wildfire smoke, with air quality readings at the most hazardous end of the spectrum.
The same was true in Behchokǫ̀ and, to a lesser extent, Whatì and Łútsël K’é.
The territory’s wildfire agency said the smoke was coming from fires along Highway 3, SS014 near Fort Providence, SS013 near Pine Point in the South Slave and FS014 northwest of Jean Marie River.
“These conditions are expected to continue through most of the day – driven by continuing hot, dry conditions which are causing more fuel to be burned off,” NWT Fire stated on Saturday afternoon.
“While this can be stressful, please know there are no new threats to communities due to this wildfire activity.
“Some relief may be on the way with forecast rain tomorrow.”
The forecast suggests wet weather will sweep through the territory from the southwest, beginning on Sunday morning.
Sunday afternoon and evening are expected to bring rain over Fort Simpson, Jean Marie River and FS014. Monday could see rain, at times heavy, over Hay River, Fort Providence, Behchokǫ̀ and Yellowknife.
After that, a largely cloudy and slightly cooler week is expected across most of the territory.
