Maverick Elias, 21, of Tuktoyaktuk, has been charged with attempted murder and assault after a shooting at Inuvik’s airport and hitting six people with a truck.
At the airport, a 58-year-old woman was shot as she exited the building shortly after 1pm on Saturday afternoon. She was given first aid by bystanders before being taken to the hospital by ambulance.
At 1:55pm, police received a tip that a truck matching the description of Elias’ had hit six people on the Dempster Highway.
All of the victims are in stable condition, said police, noting the shooting victim and suspect were known to each other but the vehicle collision victims did not know Elias.
“Officers located and arrested the suspect without incident in a clearing near the Dempster Highway shortly after 5:00pm [on September 20]. The suspected firearm and pickup truck were recovered,” said RCMP in a news release on Monday afternoon.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, Elias has been charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, pointing a firearm, aggravated assault, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and six counts of assault with a weapon. None of the charges have been proven in court.
Elias has appeared before a justice of the peace and was remanded into custody.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information on Saturday’s incidents is asked to call the Inuvik RCMP detachment at 867-777-1111 or Crime Stoppers at https://p3tips.com.
