RCMP in Behchokǫ̀ say they have charged a 33-year-old woman in connection to a fatal collision near the community’s landfill over the weekend.
According to a Tuesday press release, after receiving a call on Sunday around 11:45pm, officers attended the location and discovered a vehicle in the ditch. A seriously injured person and a deceased person were located outside the vehicle, police said, and it was determined they had both been passengers in the vehicle.
RCMP said officers provided first aid to the injured passenger until paramedics arrived. The passenger was later medevaced out of the NWT for further treatment due to the severity of their injuries.
Shortly after 1am on Monday, RCMP said police dog services located and detained the suspected driver of the vehicle. She was transported to hospital for treatment of her injuries.
RCMP have charged Leona Apples with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, failure to stop after an accident resulting in death and failure to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm.
The Justice of the Peace court docket indicates Apples appeared in court in Yellowknife on the charges Tuesday morning. Police said Apples has been remanded into custody.
