The latest hours-long closure of Highway 3 came after a transport truck hit the ditch in near-zero visibility, RCMP said.
Wildfires have been burning in areas near the road to the north of Fort Providence for most of the summer.
Earlier this month, the highway was closed for more than eight hours after a multi-vehicle collision that involved two transport trucks.
On Wednesday, the road was closed early in the morning and did not reopen until lunchtime. The NWT government said poor visibility was the reason.
RCMP told Cabin Radio a report of a “single-vehicle collision involving a transport truck that had gone into a ditch” was received at 3am.
“Visibility on the highway at the time was reported to be near-zero by officers attending the scene. No injuries were reported,” police stated.
Road traffic was held up for hours at Fort Providence to the south and the Highway 9 intersection to the north during the subsequent closure.
Satellite hotspot data suggests there was significant fire activity in areas near the road over the past 24 hours.
Visibility concerns prompted a series of overnight closures along the same stretch of highway following the September 4 multi-vehicle collision.
Two trailers were allegedly abandoned on the highway in near-zero visibility that day, and NWT highway transport officers have since laid charges.
