KLM flight is Yellowknife’s latest unexpected visitor

A KLM Dreamliner heading from Amsterdam to Los Angeles made an emergency diversion to Yellowknife on Sunday morning.

The Dutch airline’s flight 601 made the decision to divert to the NWT capital while over Nunavut’s Kitikmeot region and landed in Yellowknife at about 9:40am MT.

One witness said they had seen emergency responders boarding the flight following its arrival.

Exchanges captured in air traffic control recordings suggested the flight arrived with 304 people aboard. There appeared to be no concern regarding the aircraft itself, with the pilot request refuelling for the onward journey to LA.

No more information was immediately available.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long-haul aircraft rarely seen in Yellowknife, from which no international flights ordinarily arrive or depart.

Dreamliners have, however, made occasional past appearances in similar circumstances. A Norwegian Air Boeing 787, for example, visited in 2018.
