An event celebrating Yellowknife’s cats that had been planned for October 17 has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date, organizers say.

The Pussycats Ball Cat Show had originally been planned for that night at the city’s Elks Lodge, offering games, a bingo and vendors selling cat-themed items.

Organized by the Northern Mosaic Network, the evening was expected to raise funds for both the organization – which supports queer and trans people across the territory – and the NWT SPCA.

However, the Northern Mosaic Network and organizer Tineke Kippers said the event will now be rescheduled.

No reason for the postponement was given and no new date has been confirmed, with an announcement to follow.

The event is unique in allowing Yellowknifers to bring their cats for an evening of socializing, though cats who’d rather stay home could instead take part in an online photo contest.

If a 2025 edition does ultimately go ahead, it’ll be the second event after last year’s inaugural Pussycats Ball.

“We had a really, really great turnout last year,” Kippers said, adding 12 cats had registered in 2024 and 10 made it to Elks.

“We raised a lot of money for the SPCA, so we’re hoping to beat that number this year. And we actually had to bring it back because we got so many requests to do it again.”

Submissions for the photo contest had already closed. Community voting began on October 7.
