The federal and territorial governments are investing $5.5 million toward the repair of 150 social housing rental units across the NWT.
The repairs will help prolong the life of existing social housing units and ensure they remain safe and functional for residents, stated a Tuesday news release.
The new funding comes in part from Ottawa’s new agency, Build Canada Homes, which was announced last month as a means to “supercharge homebuilding across the country.”
Of the funding announced, nearly $3.4 million will come from Housing NWT. The rest will be covered by the federal government.
NWT housing minister Lucy Kuptana said the money “will play an important role in improving our social housing and ensure units remain safe and livable for northern residents.”
A breakdown of the communities in which the money will be spent was not immediately available.
