RCMP say a 45-year-old suspect in an Inuvik homicide has now been charged with second-degree murder and is being held in custody in Yellowknife.
Police named the man charged as Kenneth Campbell.
RCMP previously said a 38-year-old woman – who has not been publicly identified – was pronounced deceased at the town’s hospital after being found at a business on Industrial Road last Thursday evening.
In an update on Tuesday, police said investigators “believe this is a case of intimate partner violence and are classifying it as a femicide.”
“A femicide refers to the intentional sex/gender-related killings of women and girls, primarily by men,” Tuesday’s news release continued.
“The investigation into this matter, led by G Division RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit, is continuing.”
The charge against Campbell has yet to be proven in court. He was expected to make a preliminary court appearance in Yellowknife on Tuesday afternoon.
