Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with NWT Premier RJ Simpson on Friday afternoon, Carney’s office says.
The two are scheduled to meet at 2pm MT in Ottawa. No agenda for the meeting was provided.
Simpson’s office had previously said he was travelling to Ottawa for meetings with unspecified federal ministers.
The meeting with Carney comes at the end of a week focused on mining and exploration in the NWT, with the Yellowknife Geoscience Forum taking place and some momentum appearing to develop for the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor.
The corridor is a highway from the NWT to Nunavut’s Arctic coast that supporters say could, in part, lead to the development of more mines.
Simpson is also set to attend Ottawa’s annual Parliamentary Press Gallery black-tie dinner on Saturday, according to his itinerary for the week.
The Parliamentary Press Gallery is the group of 300 or so reporters assigned to cover parliamentary proceedings by the likes of CBC, CTV, The Canadian Press and other news organizations.
Membership requires a presence in Ottawa, such as a bureau or reporter. No NWT-based news services are currently members.
