The NWT government’s housing agency will start operating Yellowknife’s day shelter and sobering centre from April next year, taking over from the territory’s health authority.
The facilities are currently managed by the health authority.
In a Thursday news release, the GNWT said moving them to Housing NWT’s control was part of a “plan to have a more coordinated approach to homelessness across the Northwest Territories.”
Housing NWT already manages shelter services outside Yellowknife, the GNWT stated.
“This transition creates a stronger, more integrated housing system that will allow us to meet residents’ immediate needs while building pathways to permanent housing,” Housing NWT president Erin Kelly was quoted as saying.
