Yellowknife-based PlanIt North is introducing a $2,000 scholarship to encourage northern students into the field of community planning.

The planning firm launched the scholarship to mark its 10th anniversary.

“There is a definite need for planners in the North and within NWT communities,” a news release quoted Christine Wenman as saying. Wenman founded PlanIt North in 2015.

“Locally grown planners deeply understand their communities and are uniquely equipped to engage community members in achieving the future they envision.”

The scholarship will prioritize northern Indigenous students.

Eligible candidates can receive the award for up to four years of undergraduate study or two years of graduate study. Recipients will also be offered paid summer internships at PlanIt North.

“We want to encourage northern youth to enter the profession and raise awareness about it at the same time,” Wenman stated.

“A lot of people aren’t familiar with planning as a profession and they aren’t aware of the education pathways to get there.”

Applications will open via PlanIt North’s website in March 2026.
