If the NWT has expertise in anything right now, it’s getting through emergencies. From wildfires to floods, tens of thousands of the territory’s residents have recently been through at least one disaster.

Now, the federal government wants to hear about the role it plays in responding when those disasters strike – and in the preparation beforehand.

Ottawa has opened a “public engagement on how to strengthen federal leadership in emergency management.”

You have until February 28, 2026 to provide your feedback via the federal government’s website.

While Ottawa says it wants to hear from provinces and territories, Indigenous governments, non-profits and the private sector, there’s also space for the general public to submit comments.

Questions include:

  • What should the federal government’s role in emergency management look like in the future?
  • What tools or structures could improve coordination inside the federal government and with other jurisdictions before and during emergencies?
  • What approaches could strengthen local capacity and preparedness in provinces, territories, municipalities, and Indigenous communities?
  • What information would make your community better prepared to respond to emergencies?

“Your input will help inform future decisions and guide actions that will ensure Canada can better prepare, respond, and recover from emergencies,” the federal government states.
