Emergency drill planned for lift station construction site

If you’re in Yellowknife’s Old Town on Friday morning, don’t be alarmed if you hear some (more) loud noise coming from a construction site.

People may be familiar with noise at the site of a lift station replacement project near the intersection of 50 Avenue and School Draw Avenue – the scene of incessant loud banging in recent months from the drilling of piles.

The city is now advising residents an emergency preparedness drill will take place at the site on Friday at 11am.

The municipality said the drill will involve two air horn blasts, after which all workers are expected to evacuate the site and proceed to a designated muster point.

“The exercise is expected to take only a few minutes, with normal construction activities resuming immediately afterward,” the city stated.

“Residents in the area are asked to be aware of the planned drill and to remain calm should they hear the air horn during this time.”

The city has said the lift station needs replacing to meet the wastewater needs of residents into the future.

The project is expected to take around three years to complete and cost $38 million for construction. The federal government has pledged to pay 75 percent of that cost.

Residents can learn more about the lift station replacement project and find updates on the city’s dedicated webpage.
