The NWT’s francophone school board will open a new daycare in Yellowknife – La Tanière, or The Den – in the first week of 2026.

The centre, in a renovated home at 5102 53 Street, will accommodate children aged 19 months to four years.

Yvonne Careen, former superintendent at the Commission scolaire francophone (CSFTNO) and now a consultant, said the centre will create 25 new spaces – some of which are spoken for with others still available.

“This is another milestone for the francophone community in Yellowknife,” Careen told Cabin Radio.

CSFTNO already provides after-school care in Yellowknife and Hay River, Careen said, and La Tanière will expand what she called the francophone “continuum of education” in the NWT.

The centre will run from 7:30am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday, according to information published to CSFTNO’s Facebook page. For enquiries about La Tanière, email the centre or call 867-445-9467.

The opening day is January 5, 2026.

Careen said CSFTNO is now looking at whether it can add a similar centre in Hay River, where it operates École Boréale.

“We have come up with possible sites,” she said, including the prospect of portables on the school grounds instead of renovating an existing building.

“The parents in Hay River have been requesting a daycare for 20-odd years so this will be nothing new to them, but to know that we’re exploring it further now will be to their advantage.”
