The GNWT has launched a training package tailored to support fire departments in smaller communities.

Titled Northwest Territories Defensive Firefighter Training, or NWT-DFT, the package consists of nine workbooks.

In a news release, the territorial government said the program was developed by a committee of fire chiefs and specialists and focuses on 34 essential defensive firefighting skills – meaning work outside a hazard zone to contain fires and protect nearby structures.

“These new training materials equip NWT communities with the tools they need to train their firefighters safely and effectively at home,” communities minister Vince McKay, a trained firefighter, was quoted as saying.

“This initiative demonstrates our commitment to building local capacity, making training accessible, and empowering communities to take ownership of their fire protection. At its heart, this program is about protecting people, homes, and ensuring safe communities for northerners.”

The GNWT says this program will allow local training without the high cost associated with southern programs.

According to the territory, 19 communities plan to implement NWT-DFT and more are expected to join.

The program’s training materials – tested in 2024 – include a facilitator’s guide and evaluation tools.

The workbooks cover firefighter safety, personal protective equipment, fire service communications, command systems, fire chemistry and extinguishers, fire hose operations, water supply, defensive operations and fire prevention.
