Some water fixtures in two Hay River schools, Diamond Jenness and Princess Alexandra, have recorded lead levels above the acceptable concentration levels after testing.
As a result, the NWT’s chief public health officer has issued public health orders for both schools until the water fixtures can be remediated, either through replacement of the fixtures or installation of filters.
After fixtures have been remediated, the water will be tested again before the public health order can be lifted.
Alternative sources for drinking water will be provided in the meantime.

The DJSS trades centre did not have any water fixtures test above acceptable concentration levels, so water can continue to be used as normal in that adjacent building.
On Thursday, the territory’s infrastructure department said elevated levels of lead were also found in the water at Deninu School in Fort Resolution and Chief Sunrise Education Centre in Kátł’odeeche First Nation (KFN), but not at École Boréale in Hay River.
All NWT schools are currently being tested for lead in the water after higher than acceptable levels were first found in Yellowknife schools earlier this year.
