Caitlin Cleveland says she now has a copy of the final report into concerns about education in the Dehcho and agrees “in principle” with its recommendations – but the actual findings are not yet public.
The NWT education minister issued a statement late on Friday afternoon saying she had read the report.
There have been calls for the full report to be made public but the GNWT has said privacy issues will prevent that.
“From the outset of this investigation, participants were assured that their confidentiality would be respected, and I take that commitment seriously. The privacy of those who shared their experiences will be protected,” Cleveland stated on Friday.
“I will carefully review the report and determine how its findings can be shared publicly in a way that maintains confidentiality while meeting the public’s expectation for transparency and accountability.”
Though the review’s findings and recommendations are not yet public, the minister nonetheless stated: “I agree with the recommendations in principle.”
She said those recommendations “involve shared responsibilities” and need to be advanced as a collective.
Former Aurora College president Jane Arychuk has been brought in and is “working with education partners to address key issues and help stabilize the system,” the minister continued. No further detail about that work was provided.
“I know many residents are eager to see progress, and I share that sense of urgency. My overarching goal is the education of children, while supporting the region to heal from this situation, address what needs to be addressed, and move forward together in a way that restores trust and keeps students at the centre of everything we do,” Cleveland stated.
“I look forward to taking swift action where appropriate and to providing a comprehensive public update early in the new year.”
