If you arrive at Yellowknife’s City Hall on a Monday around noon next month, don’t expect to find councillors meeting there or be allowed to bring signs.
For years, mayor and council have gathered at City Hall on most Mondays at 12:05pm for Governance and Priorities Committee or GPC meetings.
Council meetings have then taken place at 7pm on the second and fourth Mondays of most months.
Mayor and council unanimously voted to change that schedule during the latest council meeting on Monday night.
Under the new schedule, GPC meetings will take place at 12:05pm on the first, second and third Wednesdays of most months and council meetings at 12:05pm on the fourth Wednesday of most months.
The change is intended to allow councillors more time to review agenda materials and for city staff to prepare to answer councillors’ questions ahead of meetings.
The new schedule is not expected to go into effect until some time in February.
The city’s meeting schedule currently indicates GPC meetings are set to take place on Monday, January 19 and Monday January 26 at 12:05pm followed by a council meeting on January 26 at 7pm.
Another change councillors approved on Monday is banning members of the public from displaying signs at council and committee meetings.
People will still, however, be allowed to wear pins, badges or clothing representing their views.
Councillors made that change after raising concerns that signs in city council chambers have been “distracting.”
