A Yellowknife lutenist, or lute player, will join a viol duo for a performance at the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre on Saturday, January 24.

NACC announced the show – Adversaries in Love by Les Voix Humaines – on Tuesday. The performance will start at 7:30pm with tickets available online.

Les Voix Humaines is made up of Susie Napper, who founded the Montreal Baroque Festival, and Elizaveta Miller, a Russian harpsichordist.

Tyler Hawkins – a Yellowknife baroque lutenist who has released two albums of classical guitar music, and who ran the NWT International Lute Festival for a decade – will join them on stage.

For those unfamiliar, viols are stringed musical instruments that were popular around the 17th century, when the bold and dramatic Baroque period of western classical music was also taking place.

“This program explores the genius of Gauthier, Marais, Abel, Bach(s), and Weiss, performed on authentic period instruments,” said NACC in a news release this week.

“Expect passion, virtuosity, and a rare chance to hear music that shaped history.”

Hawkins will also perform solo in Norman Wells at the Royal Canadian Legion on January 31 at 7:30pm.
