The theft of guitars from Yellowknife seniors’ facility Avens this week struck a chord with the city’s music lovers.
Avens alleged two thieves stole guitars of significant value “not just financially but also emotionally” in an early Monday break-in at its new Aven Pavilion housing block.
While there’s no update on that case, the seniors’ group says the response from the community was immediate.
On hearing of the theft, Avens said, Aven Pavilion resident Maggie Alanak “ran downstairs to donate her belated son’s guitar.”
St Joe’s School also donated guitars, as did other Yellowknife residents.
“Your kindness has not only restored our musical program but has also inspired us to think bigger,” Avens said in a newsletter circulated on Friday that documented the donations.
“We’re now exploring the possibility of expanding our guitar program with our long-term care residents and even collaborating with local schools to kick off beginner guitar classes.”
Avens added the Aven Pavilion dining room, which was broken into on Monday, “is undergoing a makeover to enhance our security measures.”
