Yellowknife Citizens for Ceasefire will hold a lunchtime rally on Tuesday marking what it described as a national day of action to close a weapons export “loophole.”
The rally focuses on Bill C-233, introduced by NDP MP Jenny Kwan.
Kwan has used the phrase “no more loopholes” to describe the bill, which targets legislation that she says currently allows weapons to end up in third countries if they first pass through the United States.
A 2025 report from four non-governmental organizations alleged explosives and other weapons-related materials were reaching Israel after transiting through the US, despite the federal government’s stance that it has “not approved any new permits for items to Israel that could be used in the current conflict in Gaza” since January 2024.
Both the government and the Conservatives have said they do not support Kwan’s bill.
Yellowknife Citizens for Ceasefire says it will hold a rally on Tuesday at NWT Liberal MP Rebecca Alty’s office from 11:45am “to demand she vote ‘yes’ on Bill C-233.” Similar rallies are planned in other cities.
