The Premier of the Northwest Territories was named one of 20 people to watch in 2020 by Maclean’s magazine in an annual list published on New Year’s Eve.

The national current affairs magazine said the premier, Caroline Cochrane, could become an ally to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as he faces staunch criticism from several provincial premiers.

“The burbling war of words between certain premiers and their nemesis in Ottawa is overwhelmingly male and pale,” Maclean’s stated.

“Caroline Cochrane, the Métis premier of the Northwest Territories – and the only female premier in Canada – is also a self-described progressive. She could be a key federal-provincial ally for the prime minister in 2020.”

She joins federal cabinet ministers Catherine McKenna and Chrystia Freeland among others on the Maclean’s list.

Musician Drake and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk are also named, alongside nine-time Everest summiteer Lhakpa Sherpa and CBC actor turned Marvel superhero Simu Liu.
