The Conservative Party in the NWT has begun the process of finding a candidate for the next federal election, whenever that may be.
No election is currently scheduled. While the Liberal government could squeak into majority territory with by-election wins in the coming months, that isn’t guaranteed.
In a news release, the NWT Conservative Party Electoral District Association said it is seeking “an energetic northern resident who will make the NWT’s voice heard in Ottawa and support a meaningful Arctic strategy that improves housing, health, security, and the economy.”
Matt Lakusta, president of the NWT’s Conservative EDA, said the party’s platform should appeal to northern voters.
“In the last decade there has been considerable changes to the dynamics of the Northwest Territories which includes economic hardships, social struggles and security stability both domestically in crime rates and internationally with threats on sovereignty,” Lakusta was quoted as saying.

“All of which the Conservative Party of Canada is wanting to address if they are provided the opportunity to lead by fellow Canadians.”
The NWT has not been represented by a Conservative at the federal level since Dave Nickerson, who was the Western Arctic Progressive Conservative MP from 1979 to 1988.
At the moment, there is no closing date for the nomination process as that’s decided by the national party.
“If you are not a member currently and are wanting to put your name forward as a nominee to membership, it is critical this is done as soon as possible in case National wishes to close the nominations in 2026 – or if there is a requirement to do so due to a federal election callout,” Lakusta told Cabin Radio by email.
Applicants for the role of NWT Conservative candidate in the next election are required to be a party member for a minimum of six months before the closure of nominations, be a northern resident, and complete a screening process.
