The construction of four social housing units is now complete in Fort McPherson, Housing NWT says.

Two new three-bedroom modular duplexes were prefabricated and assembled on site, Housing NWT said in a Thursday press release.

This type of construction allowed the agency to “move quickly and efficiently while ensuring the units are built to withstand northern conditions,” the release said.

The agency said the new units will increase the availability of “family-sized” social housing in the community and will replace ageing housing stock.

“By delivering new social housing in Fort McPherson, Housing NWT is helping to ease overcrowding, improve living conditions for families, and strengthen housing stability in the community,” the agency said.

In the release, housing minister Lucy Kuptana was quoted as saying that this project is about “responding to real needs in the community.”

“Modular construction helps us get housing to communities faster so we can deliver more homes for northerners and make sure families in Fort McPherson have access to safe, comfortable housing that is built for northern conditions,” said Kuptana.
