The union representing Canadian North’s pilots says it has “reached a tentative agreement” with the airline on a new deal that makes changes to pay and the hours pilots work.

In a news release, the Air Line Pilots Association International – or Alpa – said pilots will fly a reduced number of hours and work fewer days each month if the deal is ratified.

The agreement also moves pilots “from a salary-based compensation system to a traditional credit-based system,” Alpa said.

A ratification vote is expected in the coming weeks.

Steven Bard, who chairs the union unit representing Canadian North pilots, said the airline had “lagged behind” other carriers in scheduling and compensation.

“Management has listened to us,” he was quoted as saying.

“To keep Canadian North flying, they needed to offer improvements to our working conditions.

“The gains we have achieved with this tentative agreement will now align us with our industry peers and help make Canadian North a career destination.”

Canadian North, in an email, confirmed a tentative agreement had been reached and said it had no further comment.

The deal comes after Canadian North laid off some Boeing 737 pilots as bargaining was beginning, on the grounds that those aircraft were operating fewer flights.
