NWT Fire says a new human-caused wildfire is burning between Yellowknife and Behchokǫ̀, and is classified as “out of control.”

The fire, named ZF001, began on Saturday and is currently 0.1 hectare in size, according to the wildfire agency.

In a Monday afternoon update, NWT Fire said crews also responded to an unattended campfire on Sunday about 39km west of Yellowknife south of Highway 3.

NWT Fire said crews are currently investigating another possible human-caused fire in the Pine Point area.

“It is irresponsible to leave a fire unattended, especially on windy days like this,” the update states. “It is imperative to ensure your fires are completely extinguished before leaving the site.”

A holdover fire near Fort Providence, SS001, was the first wildfire NWT Fire reported in 2026 and it is still burning.

Fire officials said that fire is not posing any threat to the hamlet, any cabins or other infrastructure.

Fire crews will attack the fire’s hotspots to “remove remaining heat,” NWT Fire said.
