The commute from Dettah to the NWT capital just got a lot shorter, with the opening of the ice road connecting the two communities over Great Slave Lake.
The GNWT’s Department of Infrastructure confirmed the road opening at 10:24am Saturday. The recent frigid temperatures, including an ongoing extreme cold warning for the Yellowknife region, was a factor for construction crews working on the road opening over the past week.
While the road has historically opened in late December, the past five years have seen the opening delayed to early January. The ice road is now open to vehicles weighing up to 5,000 kg.
