The NWT Shelter Network has launched a new website with resources for people experiencing family violence and shelter workers.

The NWT Shelter Network is a coalition of representatives from family violence shelters across the territory. It is chaired by YWCA NWT.

Its new website includes information about the network, family violence, family violence shelters and safe homes in the territory, emergency protection orders and safety planning.

The website also features a training hub with resources, including videos and manuals, for workers at family violence shelters in Nunavut, the NWT and Yukon.

According to the website, the training was developed following a year of consultation with shelter workers across the territories who shared barriers to training they face, as well as what additional training would best help them support northern women and children.

“Well-trained shelter workers are essential to help ensure shelters are safe, empowering environments that foster healing for survivors,” Hawa Dumbuya-Sesay, executive director of YWCA NWT, stated in a news release.

“For this often high-stress job, trained staff are critical for providing trauma-informed care and specialized advocacy for women and their children.”

Training resources on the website span topics including intimate partner violence and trauma; Indigenous cultures, colonization and healing; violence and trauma-informed care; shelter administration and policy; and self-care.
