The NWT government has begun the process of finding someone who can modernize the largely paper-based systems it uses to administer land titles and corporate registries.
The Land Titles Office looks after documents related to land ownership, mortgages, leases and condo corps.
Corporate Registries oversees registrations and related reporting requirements for the likes of corporations, partnerships, societies and not-for-profits.
Each of those offices uses “a paper system managed by an antiquated back-end custom IT solution,” the GNWT states in documents published last month that seek submissions from consultants or companies offering more modern solutions.
The GNWT says it’s looking for a “fully managed, highly automated service built on a modern web-based platform” to replace its existing systems.
The territory is hoping new technology will also “significantly improve reliability, registration automation and service efficiency.”
Corporate Registries handled 4,728 different corporate entities in the 2024-25 financial year according to the GNWT. The Land Titles Office registered 2,660 documents and issued 1,034 certificates of title in the same period.
The GNWT says it is at the “request for information” stage, gathering submissions from parties interested in doing the work.
It hasn’t committed to pursuing the modernization work or identified a budget for doing so.
