The City of Yellowknife will double the cost of parking at downtown one-hour and two-hour meters starting on May 1, 2026.

Council passed a budget late last year after discussions involving parking meter increases that weren’t specified in detail at the time.

On Thursday, the city set out what will change in a news release.

At the one-hour and two-hour meters that are most often found downtown, the same amount of money will only buy you half the time from May onward.

For example, $1 currently buys 24 minutes at a meter but gets you 12 minutes from May 1.

The changes at nine-hour meters are different. At those meters, prices are going up by 50 percent, meaning $1 currently buys 60 minutes but will only get you 40 minutes from May 1.

Nickels will no longer be accepted at the one-hour and two-hour meters, the city stated in its news release. (The price changes also apply to payments made using the app.)

Between May 1-14, you may get lucky if you pay using coins and municipal enforcement hasn’t reached certain meters yet.

“The Municipal Enforcement Division will reprogram parking meters throughout the city to reflect the updated rates. During this time, residents may encounter a mix of meters displaying previous and new rates,” the city stated.
