The NWT government says five new modular housing units have arrived in Behchokǫ̀ to replace worn-out older homes.

One three-bed and a fourplex were manufactured in Hay River before being driven to Behchokǫ̀, where they’re being assembled.

The project is a partnership between Housing NWT, Tłı̨chǫ Community Builders and Metcan, the territory said in a Wednesday news release.

Behchokǫ̀ has a documented need for both repairs or replacements for ageing housing and new stock to accommodate demand.

A recent assessment based on 2024 data showed there were 494 households in Behchokǫ̀ at the time, with an average of more than four people per home – considerably higher than the territorial average.

At the end of November 2025, there were 159 households on the public housing waitlist for the community.

Housing NWT says it operates 169 social housing units and 22 market rental units in Behchokǫ̀.
