The Town of Fort Smith says it has met a territorial government deadline to energize an electric fence at its landfill by Friday last week.

The GNWT had sent an April letter warning of a “significant safety risk” from habituated bears if the fence – which has been an issue for years – was not repaired and switched on.

The territory said the town had committed to fixing the problem by May 1.

In an email published to a regulatory public registry on May 1 – and sent a day earlier – the town said the landfill’s electric fence “has been energized and is now operating at full strength.”

The town has also agreed to start logs of fence maintenance requirements and nearby wildlife sightings and share them with the GNWT.
