Two people are running to become the new Tthebatthie Denesųłiné Nation chief in a by-election scheduled for Tuesday, June 9.

John Tourangeau and Karen Youngman are the two candidates according to a notice of by-election published by the First Nation this week.

A by-election was triggered when Lorraine MacDonald, who was elected in July 2025, resigned as chief in March.

Voting for a new chief will take place on June 9 at three polling stations: the community hall in Fitzgerald (10am-1pm), Roaring Rapids Hall in Fort Smith (2-8pm) and Chateau Louis Hotel in Edmonton (10am-8pm).

Online and mail-in voting will also be available, the First Nation stated in its notice.
