The Town of Hay River says river levels are rising but “the overall risk of flooding remains low” as the 2026 spring breakup season begins.
Ice has cleared from Alexandra Falls to beyond Paradise Gardens, the town stated in a Thursday afternoon update, and water levels in the Hay River have risen by about four feet.
“Ice movement continues. The tail of the ice has passed Garden Road, while the leading edge is currently jammed before Delancey Estates,” the town stated.
“Although conditions are relatively stable with low water levels and thin ice, ice jams remain unpredictable and can result in sudden, localized flooding.”
Hay River has a breakup page where updates and information are being posted.
