RCMP said a tip from the public about drug dealing helped officers arrest a BC man with a machete at Norman Wells’ airport.
In a Thursday news release, police said they received a tip that “several individuals were travelling from Fort Good Hope to Norman Wells and were suspected of having been involved in drug activity within Fort Good Hope.”
Officers at the town airport found one suspect in possession of more than $5,000 in cash and a machete, police stated. Diego Ellis, 31, is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possessing property obtained by crime.
A 37-year-old from Fort Good Hope, whom police did not name, was arrested on an outstanding Alberta warrant at the same time, RCMP said.
Ellis has since been released by the court to appear at a late date, police stated.
“The Norman Wells RCMP would like to highlight that this disruption to the illicit drug trade in the area resulted from a member of the public willing to share information with the police,” RCMP said in Thursday’s news release.
“We are grateful to have the support of our community and encourage anyone with information on the illicit drug trade or other crimes to contact their local detachment or reach out anonymously through Crime Stoppers.”
