The City of Yellowknife says it’s asking residents for input on how to improve a trail in the Niven subdivision that encompasses a fire break created in 2023.

The route, which the city calls the Niven Lake Ravine Trail, runs along the top of homes from the highway outside the subdivision to Back Bay.

A trail already existed before 2023’s wildfire threat and evacuation, at which point the stretch of open land was widened with gravel added as contractors hurriedly built protections around Yellowknife.

The city says it now “seeks feedback on how the trail is used today, what people value most, and what should be considered as future trail design options are developed.”

There are three opportunities to provide feedback in person:

  • June 29, 4-6pm at the aquatic centre;
  • June 30, 7:30-8:30am at the trailhead; or
  • June 30, 6-8pm at the trailhead.

“Chat with the project team before taking a self-directed walk along the trail to reflect on current conditions, opportunities, and areas that may benefit from improvement,” the city suggested of the trail-based events.

You can also fill out an online survey.

Feedback “will be considered alongside technical analysis as future trail design options are developed,” the city stated.

A finalized design is expected by the winter, with construction on upgrades planned for the summer of 2027.
