The GNWT, education bodies and the Nahɂą Dehé Dene Band are studying the Charles Yohin School’s current condition to identify needed renovations or if a new school should be built.
Charles Yohin School, in Nahanni Butte, was built in 1985 and provides eduction from junior kindergarten to Grade 10.
A joint news release from the GNWT, Dehcho Divisional Education Council and Nahɂą Dehé Dene Band said the study will look at the building’s condition and it’s plumbing, heating, electrical systems and the surrounding property.
Based on its findings, the study will provide cost comparisons and recommendations for repairing the building or building a new one.
The study will also include a review of current and future student numbers to plan for the school’s long-term needs.
“Charles Yohin School is an important part of our community and our children’s future,” Chief Steve Vital of Nahɂą Dehé Dene Band was quoted as saying in the joint news release.
“Whether the outcome is a significant renovation or the construction of a new school, future decisions must be guided by the needs of our students, educators, and community, while reflecting the vision and wisdom of our Elders. We look forward to being part of this process and helping shape a strong future for education in Nahanni Butte.”
According to the news release, the study is expected to begin this summer and will include engagement with school leaders, education bodies and community partners.
